Unlv To Present Landscapes Concert

LAS VEGAS--"Landscapes, " a dance concert presented by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Dance opens the season at 8 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Judy Bayley Theatre. The concert features ballet, modern and jazz works performed by UNLV dance majors and minors and created by Dance Faculty and Guest Artists. There will be two additional performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 23.

"Cat and Masque," is a suite of dances by choreographer Margot Mink Colbert in collaboration with cellist Andrew Smith from the Department of Music, with an original backdrop by Mary Warner from the Department of Art. The choreography gives a nod to the masked balls of the Baroque period with its hi-jinx and entertainments. Four movements of J.S. Bach's 6th Suite for solo cello (prelude, allemande, courante and gavotte) will be presented. Performers include guest artist Tamara Lohrenz Morrissey and the choreographer sharing the role of the Lady of the Court partnered by Brigid Kelly. Dance department instructor Indranee Khurlsingh Clarke appears as the Cat who meanders through the scene; Jessica Pillsbury, Alexis Alba, Desiree Corsey are the dancing muses.
Louis Kavouras' work, "The Baseball Piece," will also be performed. This piece is a suite of six dances about baseball incorporating baseball movement into dance phrases. The piece has two solos-- the pitcher and the batter and group sections based on the outfield. This piece is for six dancers. "The Baseball Piece" has been performed throughout the United States, including at the opening of Jacobs Field at a Cleveland Indians game in Cleveland.

Other selections in the concert include Cathy Allen?s piece "Via Vivaldi," a modern and contemporary ballet piece set to Antonio Vivaldi's "Trio for Guitar and Strings in A major, RVs." Allen's new work, "Earth Wind Fire," a solo set on Indranee Clarke, will also be performed. Artist -in- Residence George Staib is presenting his modern work," Effort Time Space," a modern work set for eight dancers to the music of Steve Reich. Carol Rae will present her suite of dances portraying the many perceptions of beauty. "Bliss," a sensual jazz solo choreographed and performed by Emily Yewell and set to the music of David Sandborn will be also be performed.
