Des Moines, IA - July 14, 2001 (PRN): In today's economy, companies fear plummeting sales, laid-off employees fear prolonged joblessness due to hiring freezes, and employees fear the possibility of getting axed. These stages include first recognizing a situation, such as a layoff; interpreting it as positive, such as viewing the layoff as an opportunity to move forward instead of as a loss; guiding your self-talk about it, such as telling yourself that the layoff is really a blessing in disguise; feeling the effects of your self-talk, such as feeling a sense of control; and performing consistent positive action based on the positive emotions you feel. "Interpretation is the key," Mr. Wilson says, "If you interpret a situation as negative, the rest of the sequence will result in feelings of despair and unhealthy or pessimistic actions."

He adds, "We can only respond to, not control, about 90% of what happens in our lives. Therefore, we need to learn how to control our response to those situations to make them work for us instead of against us. Blaming a bad economy for our situation is a negative response. It gives control to a faceless entity. By responding to a difficult economic situation with an affirmative outlook, we can gain control over our destiny. We can come out a winner."
